General Anesthesia vs. Local Anesthesia: What’s the Difference?
At Warren Animal Hospital, we are able to administer two different kinds of anesthesia depending on the procedure that your pet will be undergoing. We’ll let you know ahead of time which anesthesia we will be using during your pet’s procedure.
General anesthesia is used to render your pet unconscious and so they will not feel pain. This is typically used for surgeries and dental procedures. Many pet owners worry about their pets being administered general anesthesia. Modern anesthesia is generally quite safe; to further lower any risk, we perform a physical examination and run blood work ahead of time to catch any underlying health issues. In addition, we follow a specific anesthetic protocol, including monitoring vital signs during the procedure to ensure the safety of our patients.
Local anesthesia is typically used for minor surgical or diagnostic procedures to control pain. Your pet will be awake but numb to the specific area that is being treated. Local anesthetics cause a loss of sensation in the area where the procedure is being performed. We sometimes use a sedative and/or an anti-anxiety medication in combination with the local anesthetic to keep pets calm during a procedure.
No matter what we recommend for your pet, our veterinarians will answer any questions you might have to help put you at ease.
Patient Monitoring at Warren Animal Hospital
Whether your pet is recovering from surgery or needs extra attention because of an infection, our patient monitoring team in Phillipsburg will make sure that your pet has everything they need to rest and recover.
Your pet may need monitoring for conditions such as:
- Coming out from under general anesthesia
- Recovering from an illness or infection
- Resting with a broken bone
There are many reasons that your pet may need to be more closely monitored under our care that are not listed above. Regardless of why your pet needs the extra attention, our team will keep your pet as safe as possible throughout their stay with us.
We monitor our patients closely. One of our veterinary technicians will assess your pet’s heart and respiratory rate, blood pressure, and other vital signs to prevent any negative effects from the anesthesia.
If you have any questions or concerns about your pet’s upcoming procedure and what protocols we will be following, please don’t hesitate to contact us today.
